August 16, 1777: During the American Revolutionary War, American militiamen from Vermont and Massachusetts achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Bennington, defeating a detachment of German-Hessian troops sent by British General Burgoyne. August 16, 1780: The Battle of Camden in South Carolina was a major defeat for American forces under General Gates, who were defeated by British General Charles Cornwallis, resulting in significant American casualties and captures. August 21, 1863: Confederate raider William Quantrill led a brutal terrorist raid on Lawrence, Kansas, killing approximately 150 civilians and destroying much of the town.
