The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force & Coast Guard are the Armed Forces of the United States. The Army & Air National Guard are reserve components of their services, operating partly under state authority.
As one of the three military departments (Army, Navy, and Air Force) reporting to the Department of Defense, the Army provides the ground forces that protect the United States and is the largest and oldest service in the U.S. military.
Although a component of the Department of the Navy, the Marine Corps command structure includes Marine Expeditionary Forces and Aircraft Wings and maintains amphibious & ground units for contingency & combat operations.
On, above, and below the water, the Navy is the maritime service branch of the United States Armed Forces, and as the world's largest and most powerful Navy in existence, it is a major deterrent to aggression around the world.
With a rapid, flexible, and lethal air and space capability that can deliver forces anywhere in the world within hours, the Air Force conducts independent air operations and provides air support for land & naval forces.
As a component of the Department of the Air Force, the Space Force organizes, trains, and equips space forces to protect the interests of the United States and its allies in space and provide space capabilities to the joint force.
The Coast Guard provides law and maritime safety enforcement, marine and environmental protection, and military naval support. Part of the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, the Coast Guard operates under the Navy during times of war.
. Comprised of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard, the National Guard is a versatile force, supporting combat missions, domestic emergencies, humanitarian efforts, homeland security operations, and more.
It is yesterday's defenders of freedom that make up Today's VFW.
