It is yesterday's defenders of freedom that make up Today's VFW.
Our Mission:
To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts, serve our veterans, the military, & our communities, and advocate on behalf of all veterans.
Our Vision:
Ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.
...we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group.
WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Kosovo, War in Afghanistan, War in Iraq, War on Global Terror and other Peace-Keeping Expeditionary Campaigns throughout the globe.
In August, there are several military-related events and observances:

August 8, 1945: The Soviet Union declared war on Japan, launching a massive invasion of Japanese-occupied Manchuria with over a million troops, a significant action that contributed to Japan's eventual surrender. August 16, 1777: During the American Revolutionary War, American militiamen from Vermont and Massachusetts achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Bennington, defeating a detachment of German-Hessian troops sent by British General Burgoyne. August 16, 1780: The Battle of Camden in South Carolina was a major defeat for American forces under General Gates, who were defeated by British General Charles Cornwallis, resulting in significant American casualties and captures. August 21, 1863: Confederate raider William Quantrill led a brutal terrorist raid on Lawrence, Kansas, killing approximately 150 civilians and destroying much of the town. August 23, 1864: Union Admiral David Farragut famously declared "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" as his fleet sailed into Mobile Bay, Alabama, overcoming Confederate mines and capturing Fort Morgan, a crucial victory that broke Confederate control of the Gulf of Mexico ports. August 17, 1943: The Allies completed the conquest of Sicily after 38 days of fighting, securing control of the Mediterranean and leading to the fall of Mussolini's regime in Italy. August 24-25, 1814: British forces invaded Washington, D.C., during the War of 1812, burning the Capitol, the White House, and other public buildings in retaliation for American actions in Canada. August 1, 1914: Germany declared war on Russia, a pivotal act that rapidly escalated the conflict into the First World War. August 1, 1944: The Warsaw Uprising began, a major Polish resistance operation against Nazi German occupation that lasted for 63 days. August 2, 1990: Iraq invaded Kuwait, leading to the massive Allied military buildup known as Operation Desert Shield and the subsequent Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm.

Military Humor
Two airmen from NY were at the golf course near Lackland and were waiting to tee off. They started talking about being back in Texas one said to the other only 2 thing come from Texas Football Players & Hookers.A full bird was standing right behind them and over heard what was said. He tapped the airmen on the back and said "My wife is from Texas". Without blinking an eye The Airman said... "And what postion does she play!"
Our programs support our service members while they are on the front line, as they are being discharged and long after they return. Your tax-deductible donation will be immediately directed to the VFW programs where your support is most urgently needed.
